Project “Improving Water Resources Management in Surkhandarya Region (Rehabilitation of the Khazarbog–Oqqopchig‘ay Canal System)” with the participation of the Islamic Development Bank

The main objective of the project is to improve water supply to 103,400 hectares of irrigated land.

Project area: Surkhandarya Region.
Total project cost: USD 122.72 million.
Of which:
Islamic Development Bank loan — USD 89.55 million;
contribution of the Republic of Uzbekistan — USD 33.17 million.
Implementation period: 2015–2019.

Project outcomes:
- 38,500 hectares of irrigated land in Sherabad District will be supplied with gravity-flow water;
- two pumping units, each with a capacity of 20 m³/s, will be taken out of operation. This will result in annual savings of USD 50,000 in pumping station operating costs and USD 1.6005 million in electricity costs;
- the second lifting stage of the Bandikhon and Dustlik pumping stations will be completed, resulting in annual savings of USD 107,600 in operating costs and USD 1.3245 million in electricity costs;
- increasing the canals’ efficiency from 72% to 92% will ensure their reliable and safe operation.

Under the project, contractors were selected for all six construction packages and contracts were signed with them.

In 2018, USD 5.97 million in loan funds was disbursed. A total of 15.8 km of canals was rehabilitated, 654,700 m³ of earthworks were completed, and 29,900 m³ of concrete works were completed.

In 2019, USD 17.2 million in loan funds was disbursed. A total of 43.1 km of canals was rehabilitated, 28.5 km of canals received concrete lining, 69 hydraulic structures were rehabilitated, and 1,387,900 m³ of earthworks and 58,470 m³ of concrete works were completed.
