The first gender technical working group meeting

How Should Gender Considerations Be Integrated into the Water Sector?

Today, the first technical meeting dedicated to gender issues in the water sector was held in the conference hall of the Information, Analytical and Resource Centre of the Ministry of Water Resources of the Republic of Uzbekistan.

The idea of establishing a working group on gender mainstreaming in the water sector emerged during the first meeting of the Sector Working Group on Water Resources, Water Supply and Sanitation, held on 16 March 2023.

All relevant partner organizations actively engaged in the water sector were invited to the meeting. Participants included representatives of the Ministry of Water Resources of the Republic of Uzbekistan, the Information, Analytical and Resource Centre, the Asian Development Bank, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the European Union, FAO, GIZ, the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, UNDP and other organizations.

Participants were briefed on the findings of the gender assessment of Uzbekistan’s water sector, conducted under the National Water Resources Management Project in Uzbekistan. The project is implemented by the Ministry of Water Resources with support from the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC).

UNDP representatives presented the results of an assessment of gender considerations in national climate policy. Partner organizations then shared information about the gender-related initiatives they are implementing in the water sector.

The meeting concluded with a discussion of the next steps for mainstreaming gender considerations in the water sector.
