FIRST TECHNICAL MEETING ON WASTEWATER STANDARDS

The first meeting on wastewater treatment standards in Uzbekistan was held as part of the project entitled “Strengthening Measures for Water Supply, Sanitation and the Protection of Water Resources from Accidental Pollution in Uzbekistan in the Context of Climate Change,” implemented by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE).

The purpose of the meeting was to review Uzbekistan’s existing wastewater treatment standards and agree on the next steps in this area.

The meeting addressed the following issues:

  1. Differences between national wastewater treatment requirements, taking into account the condition of the receiving water bodies into which treated wastewater is discharged;
  1. Challenges related to outdated municipal wastewater treatment facilities in Uzbekistan, resulting in declining treatment quality and a growing number of accidental discharges;
  1. Pollution of natural water bodies caused by the discharge of inadequately treated wastewater from industrial enterprises;
  1. Kazakhstan’s experience in revising its water quality classification system and developing national standards and a framework for best available techniques.
